Festival of Flowers Newsletter #8 April 2009
2010 Festival Dates Announced –Make sure to tell out-of-town friends the dates so they can book their trip to the Garden City:
Festival of Flowers Dates for 2010 19th Feb – 14th March

Floral Carpet and Displays in ChristChurch Cathedral
19th Feb – 28th February

Floral Art by Denise Reid

This year people were so keen to see the Floral Carpet they turned up even before it was installed! This was due to a change from the traditional 10-day event to a month-long 20th anniversary celebration, a new direction for the Christchurch Garden City Trust. We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused by this change in its first year. We will continue with the month-long events programme in 2010 while bringing the Floral Carpet back to the start of the Festival. So, keep an eye on www.festivalofflowers.co.nz for event updates. You can also ring the Festival of Flowers office on (03) 365 5403 if you have any questions about the Festival.

Visitors to the Floral Carpet and Displays in ChristChurch Cathedral were inspired to record their impressions in the Cathedral Visitors Book:

What a beautiful experience – unforgettable. Liew and Ivan van Essem, South Africa Just simply beautiful! Jean, Linda and Anne, Tanzania
Designed by Jan Leaper
Stunningly beautiful and wonderful music. Florence and Barry Higham, Scotland Amour, sagesse, beaute’. Fagard Fruçon, France

International consensus has it that the 2009 Floral Carpet & Displays were expressions of breathtaking beauty!

We will be adding 2009 Festival photos to our website shortly. If you have any interesting shots you would like to share, please e-mail them to festival.marise@xtra.co.nz.

Some Highlights of the 2009 Festival of Flowers by Photographer Rodney Love

Volunteers Afternoon at Oderings
Thank you to Oderings Garden Centre for the fabulous afternoon at their Stourbridge Street premises. Over 100 Festival volunteers enjoyed Devonshire teas and mouthwatering cakes in the café’s beautiful glasshouse, lushly festooned with stunning bougainvillea and wisteria in bloom. To complete the afternoon event, those attending were treated to an informative ‘behind the scenes’ nursery tour. Julian Odering and his staff did a great job, revealing to all that they are really, really into plants! The Christchurch Garden City Trust Board members and staff were delighted to offer a relaxing, tasty and educational afternoon to those who made our events such a success. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped put on a great 2009 Festival.
We look forward to working with you again in 2010!

Armchair Gardening: www.humanflowerproject.com
www.humanflowerproject.com is a flower-focused website, offering “an international newsgroup, photo album and discussion of humankind’s relationship with the floral world”. Editor and main contributor Julie Ardery has taken a shine to the Festival of Flowers and recently published two articles on this year’s events (articles can be found by entering ‘Festival of Flowers’ into the search window). In her article on the popularity of Floating Islands with the Avon River duck population, Julie described the Festival as “one of the most flamboyant floral celebrations in the world”. The site is well worth a visit on a rainy day. Written and photographic submissions to the website are also welcome.
